Under what conditions would you suggest using a primer under the paint? I am painting the engine bay of my car which has areas of bare metal, areas of light body filler and areas of OEM automotive paint. I intend on using one of the gloss gray colors (probably the std gray).

Do you suggest using a primer on clean galvanized steel?

Seymour Paint –
Galvanized steel requires acid etching or at least the use of a self-etching primer. Our 20-1682 self-etch primer would be a good choice.

Question
Jameson –
Is MRO Primer durable enough to use as a top coat? Trying to keep the red oxide as a finish
(0) (0)
Answer
Seymour Paint –
You could keep it as a finish coat, but it would be more susceptible than a topcoat to things like sunlight and abrasion. While we donât make one, a matte clear finish would go a long way to protecting the primer while still keeping that look.
