Question
Dan Miller –
I use the Seymour green zinc phosphate primer on both Aluminum and Stainless diamond plate panels.
1. How long do i need to wait between the first coat and recoat?
1b. Do I need 2 coats?
2. After the 2nd coat, can I heat in paint oven to speed full cure? At what temperature and for how long?
3. Is there a time window after the primer cures before I apply, in this case, Durabak textured coating? In other words, do I need to wait a minimum time of 24 hours and a maximum of 72 at room temperature? Or if heated at 125°F, minimum of 2 hours, no maximum before textured coating?
3b. If I heat in paint oven, does that time change?
Thanks,
DM

Answer
Seymour Paint –
You only need one medium coat, and it doesnât have to be a full hide. If you want to do 2 coats please wait 10 minutes. Multiple coats will extend the cure time, but you can accelerate the cure by warming the primer. Do not exceed 140F. I donât have exact times for drying/curing as there are variables with temperature/humidity/paint thickness.

Question
Jeff in RI –
I want to use Hi-Tech Engine Enamel Spray PaintâAMC Blue Metallic to paint the heat exchanger for a diesel engine on a sailboat. It’s a separate unit, not integral with the engine. It is made out of copper and copper alloy. Approx 3″ diameter and 18″ long. Is 16-897 Seymour Zinc Phosphate Primer the primer you would recommend? If not, what should I use?

Answer
Seymour Paint –
Yes, that is the correct primer. Apply 2 light coats, no more, and make sure to allow 48 hours to cure before top coating as itâs a slow dry.
