Galvanized steel requires acid etching or at least the use of a self-etching primer. Our 20-1682 self-etch primer would be a good choice.

Jameson –
Is MRO Primer durable enough to use as a top coat? Trying to keep the red oxide as a finish
Upvote if this was helpful (0) Downvote if this was not helpful (0) Flag for removal
Answer
Seymour Paint –
You could keep it as a finish coat, but it would be more susceptible than a topcoat to things like sunlight and abrasion. While we donât make one, a matte clear finish would go a long way to protecting the primer while still keeping that look.

Question
Eddie Loven –
The spec sheet for 620-1431 says “suggested uses: rusty metal” but the instructions on the can read the surface must be “free of rust”. Which is accurate? Also the can does not suggest a wait time before applying a topcoat, the spec sheet says recoat in 20 minutes. Is 20 minutes a sufficient wait time for paint application.
Upvote if this was helpful (0) Downvote if this was not helpful (0) Flag for removal
Answer
Seymour Paint –
Seymour’s MRO is formulated to protect against rust. However, it’s important to clean and remove as much rust as possible before painting. Rust can prevent paint from adhering to the surfaces properly. If the rust is not removed prior to painting, the rust can continue to deteriorate the metal underneath the paint.
